(Danica Pecirep, NECN: Worcester, Mass.) - Getting needles off the street is the mission of Operation Yellow Box.
Dr. Leonard Morse is Worcester's Public Health Commissioner. Monday, he gathered with other city officials to celebrate Worcester's first needle drop box at Aids Project Worcester.
The boxes are meant to enable those who use needles either for medical purposes, illegal drug use, or otherwise to dispose of them safely. Aids Project Worcester was picked as the first site because the cost for servicing it is being paid for by the organization.
Worcester City Councilor Barbarba Haller has opposed drop boxes from the get go. She says it supports illegal drug use.
Haller wants hard numbers showing if drop boxes have worked in other cities nationwide...such as how much it costs taxpayers, and who is using them.
However, all agree keeping needles off Worcester streets is a shared goal.
