(Danica Pecirep, NECN: Worcester, Mass.) - A 911 call, made by a student at Doherty High School, just after noon on Thursday put the school and police on alert. The student said there was a bomb on school grounds and within minutes, police arrived to investigate. Police traced the phone call back to a pay phone inside the school cafeteria - school officials looked at surveillance video. Some students were questioned and one confessed to the crime - saying it was a joke.
The student arrested was a 14-year-old ninth grader from Worcester. He is being charged with threatening to bomb a building. Robert Pizzella is the Worcester Public School safety liason.
Pizzella: “The student admitted it was a prank - a very impulsive bad decision he made – however, bad decisions lead to bad consequences.”
Pizella says prank or not, Worcester schools have a protocol in place to handle all types of emergencies.
