(NECN) - The pressure is on for an emergency bailout of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. It's being pushed by Governor Deval patrick and the house leadership. But the State treasurer and a leader in the Senate are pushing back, warning of a possible $4 billion impact on taxpayers.
The root of the problem, as disclosed in the Thursday's Boston Globe, the Turnpike is awash in debt because of the Big Dig project and some borrowing gimmicks that backfired.
According to the Globe, debt payments will add $7 billion to the cost of the Big Dig and the project won't be paid off until 2038.
Mary Connaughton serves on the board of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, and Stephen Adams served as a transportation analyst for New York Legislature and studied Massachusetts transportation policy for the Pioneer Institute.
