| August 28, 2008 Sobering warning for drivers this Labor Day weekend
|
(NECN: Ally Donnelly, Boston, Mass.) - Massachusetts State Police are reminding people to be smart when they hit the roads this holiday weekend, and a man who lost his unborn child to a drunk driving accident is helping to drive that message home.
Labor Day weekend is a time of backyard barbecues, picnics and as police say, unfortunately, a time for drunk driving.
Brian and Heidi Blongastainer were counting the days before their first child was to be born. Heidi was 37 weeks pregnant when a drunk driver hit her car head-on on Cape Cod. It was July of 2005. The Franklin, Massachusetts couple laid terrified in their crumpled car. Heidi's water broke on impact. Later in the hospital, doctors told the couple that their unborn daughter could not survive the injuries from the crash.
The Blongastainers are warning people of the real consequences of drinking and driving ahead of the holiday weekend. They are asking people to take a step back and think before getting into a car.
The couple does now have a two-year-old child, but they will never stop thinking about the unborn child they lost.
