Water recedes, cleanup begins in Fort Kent, Van Buren

(Marnie MacLean, NECN: Aroostook County, Maine) - The rain-swollen St. John River is beginning to recede in northern Maine, sparing downtown Fort Kent but leaving behind plenty of damage for riverfront homeowners.

Well over 100 homes have been seriously damaged by floodwaters in the small towns that line the river, including parts of Fort Kent and Van Buren, where residents like Alyre Mazerole can only wait for the water to recede, so he can see what he has left.

The river crested at 30.14 feet in Fort Kent late Wednesday night, just inches below the dike built in 1976 to protect the downtown. Residents of some buildings are being allowed to return to their homes. Others may have to wait until the weekend before the water recedes far enough that they can get back in.
