(Jennifer Eagan, NECN: Worcester, MA) – Twenty-three year old Ashley Day plead guilty to a list of charges in Worcester superior court Thursday. Including...stealing almost $90,000 from her grand parents and great grandparents.
The defendant advised she had spent the money on trips to Germany/Aruba/Mexico and that she would buy things with these credit cards and pay them off electronically.
She also bought an SUV with the money she swindled. But her scheme didn't end there.
While Day worked as a waitress...she stole a customers credit card information and used it to buy hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards.
She also got a credit card in her sister's name and charged almost $8,000 to it.
Day's father says his daughter had no prior record.
Day's lawyer says she wasn't the only one behind the scam.
Before sentencing...Day turned and apologized to her family...the first time her father has ever heard her express remorse.
“She's not one that really shows her emotions I think she was hoping it would all go away which it never really did”
She was sentenced to 18 months in prison. The eight months she has spent behind bars awaiting trial will count toward that sentence. She'll spend five years on probation.
