| November 20, 2008 Director of "Students for Obama" recalls whirlwind ride
|
(Marnie MacLean, NECN) - When the former governor of Maine wants to catch up on
'Your' life...you know things have been pretty interesting.
22-year-old Meredith Segal is finally getting some down
time after a whirlwind ride on what she calls the "Obama tour bus."
Meredith Segal
"A lot of my friends have joked that the limits of the real world or possibility have
never seemed to get in my way...so I think I wanted to see what was possible."
It was more than two years ago when Meredith first imagined
An Obama presidency.
Meredith
"The things senator Obama spoke about were a lot of the issues that were more
important to me and the way he spoke about them gave me confidence as a leader
he could bring about real change."
That was 2006, before senator Obama even announced
He would run for president. Meredith wanted to know
If other students shared her enthusiasm...she
Created a Facebook page called Barack Obama for president.
"By the time Sen. Obama announced his candidacy Meredith had 60 thousand students
signed up on the Facebook page...and soon found herself with a new title, national
director...students for Obama"
She juggled school while flying across the country
To set up campus rally's and organize students. As the
Movement grew...so did her visibility.
"Where’s Meredith? Come here Meredith"
Meredith says it was amazing to see the passion
Students
had for the political process....
Meredith
"Just people from all over the place who were excited and inspired and were
there and for the first time it seemed possible he would be president and
students would play a big part in making that happen."
When the votes were counted the organization Meredith started and helped
Build did have an impact..with two out of three voters younger than 30
Going for Obama. On election night, Meredith was given a place of honor..
Front row in Grant Park.
Meredith
"The moment they announced our next first family and president, he came out,
it was so amazing to stand there and watch and be part of that moment."
Meredith admits there has been some post election let down.
Jeffrey Selinger, a government professor at Bowdoin...says
It's normal for that student energy to dial back now.
Jeffrey Selinger
"I suspect that for a lot of democrat and Obama supporters there's a sense of relief
they don't have to pay attention..someone they trust is now in command."
Meredith hopes the commitment to Obama will shift
To a commitment to issues. Her next step? There's been no
Formal offer from the Obama Administration...
"Right now he's still figuring out Secretary of State, Sec. of defense, if he
wants to offer me one of those I’m all ears"
Actually she's not sure she wants to go to
Washington....former governor Angus King offers
This advice:
Angus King
"It’s not often in one's life you get a chance to work in a new administration
for someone you believe in and feel passion about..that's an opportunity that
shouldn't be passed up."
Perhaps her ride on the Obama tour bus
Isn't over just yet.
