| December 24, 2008 Report clears Obama, Transition Team

(NECN/ABC) - As President-elect Obama vacationed in Hawaii, his lawyers released a report detailing contacts between the Transition Team and embattled Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. The conclusion? There was no wrong doing.
The report had been ready for several days, but was finally released on Tuesday after the President-elect and his top aides were interviewed by federal prosecutors.
An internal report by the Transition Team confirmed that the President-elect and his staff did nothing wrong. But one of his closest advisors had contact with Blagojevich, who stands accused of trying to sell Obama's vacated Senate seat.
"There was only one person associated with the transition that had any contact with the governor or his staff and those contact were totally appropriate and acceptable," incoming White House Counsel Greg Craig said.
The report identified incoming Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel as the person who spoke on the phone at least once with Blagojevich, and had four calls with the Governor's Chief of Staff. The report claims that there was no pay for play scheme, with only possible successors to Obama's Senate seat mentioned in the conversations. According to the report, the President-elect had no contact with the Governor, as the U.S. attorney maintained earlier this month when Blagojevich was arrested.
"OK. I'm not going to speak for what the President-elect was aware of. We make no allegations that he's aware of anything.
That's as simply as I can put it," U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said.
The investigation was based on staff's memories of the conversations, not the federal wire taps, which means the saga may not be over.
"If other things, information comes out, something that we are unaware of today comes out next week, tomorrow, then I think it could be problematic just having to deal with it," ABC News political contributor Matthew Dowd said.
And even with this report filed, the drama will continue for Illinois. The state is headed into the new year with a Governor facing impeachment and the possibility of jail should the investigation warrant it. All while Illinois has only one U.S. Senator.
