What's next for Sarah Palin?

(NECN: Michelle Brown) - Former Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin is stepping down as Governor of Alaska effective July 26.

The move has many speculating what is next in her political life.

In a hastily called press conference at her home in Wasilla, Alaska, Governor Sarah Palin announces she's resigning from office at the end of the month.

Palin said, "We know we can effect change outside government.”

Jim Rappapport---the former chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party on Palin's announcement.

"I’m surprised that she’s resigning now. I do understand the pressure she's under has been phenomenal.”

Presidential historian and BU professor Thomas Whalen isn't buying the pressure argument.

At the press conference Palin refused to give details about her future plans. But strategists on both sides of the political aisle say it's likely she'll make a run for the White House in 2012.

The timing of Palin’s announcement-- over the July 4th weekend--- has left some puzzled.

The 45-year-old mother of five and self-described hockey mom was thrust into the political spotlight when John McCain chose her as his running mate in the 2008 presidential race.

The former high school basketball player--once known as Sarah barracuda used a point guard analogy in explaining her decision to step aside.
