Former D.C. mayor Barry charged with stalking

(NECN/WJLA: Washington, D.C.) - Former Washington D.C. Mayor Marion Barry was arrested Saturday and charged with stalking a woman.

The United States Park Police said Barry was taken into custody after a woman flagged down an officer and complained that Barry was stalking her.

"Both of those vehicles were stopped, and the officer from the U.S Park Police that was flagged down. Interviewed the woman that had flagged him down, and spent a few minutes talking with her, and after a few minutes of talking with her, this officer went over and spoke to the person at the other car," U.S. Park Police spokesperson David Schlosser said. "As a result of that conversation, I don't know what they were talking about; apparently sufficient cause was determined to place the person under arrest that was in the other car. That person that was placed is determined to be Mr. Barry, who is the Ward 8 council member."

Barry was charged with misdamenor stalking and was later released.

Barry served four terms as mayor. While he was in his third term -- back in 1990 -- he was videotaped in a hotel room smoking crack cocaine during an FBI sting. Barry served six months in prison and in 1994 regained the mayor's office.

He is currently a D.C. Council member.
