| October 31, 2009 State elections to test Obama influence

(NECN/ABC News) - President Barack Obama is facing the first test of his political coattails on Tuesday as three Democratic candidates face tough races against Republican opponents.
Earlier this week Obama campaigned for one of those candidates, Creigh Deeds, who is currently trailing Republican Bob McDonnell in the race for Governor of Virginia.
Obama, who was the first Democratic presidential candidate to win Virginia since 1964, told a campaign crowd with their help Deeds can be elected.
The President is also scheduled to appear with incumbent New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, currently in a dead heat with two other candidates.
Corzine has faced voter anger for his handling of the state's economy due in part to raising sales taxes and cutting government jobs.
The smallest contest involves a special election for the seat of former NY Congressman John McHugh, who resigned to become Army secretary. While that race may not have national implications, House Democrats may need every vote they can get to pass issues like health care reform.
Some political analysts believe that the upcoming elections may give Republicans added momentum for the 2010 midterms.
