Flaherty, Yoon encouraged by new voters

(NECN: Greg Wayland, West Roxbury, Mass.) - After months of campaigning, voters in Boston will make a decision on who they want to lead the city for the next four years.

On Monday, Mayor Thomas Menino and challenger City Councilor At Large Michael Flaherty were both out campaigning for last minute votes.

Inseparable on the stump, Flaherty wore a blue parka and Sam Yoon a suit, as the two walked through Jamaica Plain in search of votes on the eve of the election. Yoon is not running for anything, other than a spot as deputy mayor promised him by Flaherty.

"It's been exciting, that's for sure. It's the next generation of political leadership," Flaherty said.

The pair is encouraged by reports that 10,000 new voters have been added to the city rolls since 2005.

"We went out and registered a lot of new voters. That was our outreach to, particularly, the younger demographic," Flaherty said.

Flaherty and Yoon claim 10-percent of voters remain undecided. Yoon said that those voters were not Menino voters simply being polite.

"People literally have been telling us, 'We're worried that he's going to find out we're voting against him'," Yoon said.

The charge of voter intimidation has been refuted by the Menino campaign.
