In the national races, there is a thought among some political pundits that they can be viewed as a referendum on President Barack Obama. If key Democrats lose, it could point to the president losing his political luster.
Sarah Palin is playing a role, campaigning in the New York Congressional race for the "conservative party" candidate. The Republican dropped out over criticism within her own party that she was too liberal.
