(NECN: Trenton, N.J.) - Republican Chris Christie defeated Gov. Jon Corzine (D) in New Jersey, despite the campaign help from President Barack Obama.
After the race was called, Gov. Corzine called Christie and said that he congratulated the governor-elect.
"I want you to know that Chris was gracious in his response and we will work hard together to make sure that the transition is smooth, that we are able to do everything that serves the people of this great state," Gov. Corzine said. "That's my responsibility, that's our responsibility, that's my administration's responsibility -- and I know we'll live up to it."
He said that he was proud of his time as governor, calling it a joy he could have never imagined.
"It has been a tough time, but it has been one where we're making a difference in people's lives," Gov. Corzine said. "I'm proud of my administration and the people who have worked so hard to make it possible."
