|
(NECN/ABC) - Time for hard-ball politics, presidential style.
He may be in Israel, but President Bush has jumped into the middle of this
year's run for the White House.
He and John McCain are taking on democrat Barack Obama.
He may have been overseas, but President Bush jumped feet-first into
election politics back home.
President Bush:
“Some seem to believe we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals //
we have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into
Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: "lord, if only I could have
talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided."
It was a not-so-veiled swipe at Barack Obama, who has said that as president, he would meet with leaders like Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
John McCain:
“He wants to sit down across the table from an individual who leads a country
that says Israel is a stinking corpse, that is dedicated to the extinction
Of Israel. My question is: what does he want to talk about?”
Obama -- the likely Democratic nominee -- called the remarks a "false
political attack."
The war of words previews a fight both sides will be having until November.
David Chalian
“McCain wants to paint Obama as inexperienced in national security and
Foreign affairs. And Barack Obama wants to push back against bush, quote,
Unquote, "cowboy diplomacy."
Meanwhile,
Obama and rival Hillary Clinton are both gearing up for the next
primary showdowns in Kentucky and Oregon on Tuesday.
The Obama campaign has circled May 20 on the calendar, when the Illinois
Senator is expected to have enough delegates to finally clinch the
Democratic nomination.
