(NECN: Washington) - Hillary Clinton told supporters on Saturday to unite behind her former rival Barack Obama.

"We will live in a strong America and that is why we must help elect Barack Obama our president. This election is a turning point election," said Clinton.

The former first lady suspended her historic campaign for the presidency on Saturday afternoon.

Obama secured the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday after primaries in South Dakota and Montana.

"Could we really elect an African-American as president? Senator Obama has answered that one," said Clinton.
