Clinton asks supporters to help elect Obama

(NECN: Washington) - Hillary Clinton is throwing her full support behind Barack Obama. The former first lady ended her historic quest to become the first female president with a speech Saturday at the National Building Museum.

"My commitment to you and the progress we seek is unyielding. You have humbled me with your commitment to our country," said Clinton.

"I will continue to stand strong with you. The dreams we share are worth fighting for."

"The way to continue our fight now, to accomplish the goals in which we stand, is to take our energy and take all we can to help elect Barack Obama the next president of the United States," said Clinton. "I throw my full support behind him."

Obama secured the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday after primaries in South Dakota and Montana. He planned to spend the weekend at home in Chicago.

The New York Senator is determined to rally the party behind Obama as he prepares to for the general election against Republican Arizona Senator John McCain.
