(NECN) - A Sunday night shakeup in the Clinton camp, or a shifting of roles among loyal staffers and friends? The apparant stepping down by Patti Solis Doyle as senator Hillary Clinton's campaign manager with longtime aide Maggie Williams taking on the role, has watchdogs of politics and rhetoric buzzing.
"it basically says they're unhappy with the campaign so far."
Dr. Bob Rosenthal of Suffolk University in Boston sees the shift as a pivotal move in a neck and neck primary race.
"It's definitely a strategic move, and it is a huge shakeup despite what the Clinton spokespersons are saying, you do not dump your campaign manager in the middle of the primary campaign, especially this particular campaign where it is so tight."
Solis Doyle emailed fellow staffers, saying:
"I have been proud to manage this campaign and prouder still to call Hillary my friend for more than 16 years.....Maggie is a remarkable person and i am confidant she will do a fabulous job."
Maggie Williams served as Hillary Clinton's chief of staff in the White House when Clinton was first lady. Williams, a black female can only help say analysts, as Barack Obama is on Clinton's heels for the democratic nomination.
"one of the things she brought...Maggie Williams brought...was a link to the black community ...with her role...a very prestigious position."
Clearly Obama cut into the African American vote....the strategy is not working."
The Clinton camp
says Solis Doyle, a mother of two young children, will stay on as a senior advisor and will still travel with the campaign.
