| June 13, 2008 Friends and colleagues remember Tim Russert
|
(NECN) - Tim Russert was the host of "Meet The Press" for the past 17 years, the longest run in the program's 60-year history.
He was known for his tough interviews, often grilling some of the world's most powerful and influential people.
Joe Lieberman
He was tough on meet the press, but I never felt he was out to knock down government or politicians. He was trying to make us all better, and I think he really did that."
Barack Obama: There wasn't a better interviewer in television. Not a more thoughtful analyst of our politics.
John McCain:
He was hard, he was fair. He was at the top of his profession. He loved his country. He loved the Buffalo Bills, and most of all he loved his family."
Tim Russert loved the Bills, because it was his hometown team.
He was born and raised in Buffalo -- his father still lives there.
In 2004, Russert wrote a best-selling biography, "Big Russ and Me"... A loving tribute to his father.
In the 1970's -- a young Russert served as counselor to New York Governor Mario Cuomo.
He was also chief of staff to democratic senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan from 1977 to 1982.
Two years later -- Russert joined NBC news.
He had passion for politics.
On election night -- he would often appear around-the-clock on NBC and MSNBC.
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry kicked off his 2004 presidential bid on meet the press.
