(ABC/NECN) - Republicans from across the nation are gathering in St. Paul for their convention, but Hurricane Gustav could disrupt their plans.
Script: As St. Paul Minnesota gets ready for the Republican National Convention- a hurricane hundreds of miles away is threatening to derail the celebration.
Campaigning with running mate Sarah Palin in Pennsylvania- John McCain said the tone of the convention could change..
"I would all of us like obviously to keep in our thoughts and prayers the people on the gulf coast, especially in New Orleans, who are threatened by this terrible natural disaster of a hurricane."
The monstrous storm puts organizers in a difficult position- a McCain campaign advisor says legally the party has to have it- so cancellation or postponement doesn't seem a strong option.
In St. Paul, Republican delegates are still streaming into the city-
"I think it's kind of a balance. It's mindful of the situation keeping it in the back of our minds. "
Campaigning in Ohio- Barack Obama was also keeping tabs on the storm- but McCain's VP choice wasn't ignored by the Obama campaign.
"I think you guys can take a look at Gov. Palin's and Joe Biden's record and make your own judgments in terms of who you think has what it takes to be an outstanding vice president.
On Sunday, McCain and Palin will go to Mississippi ahead of the hurricane with Mississippi's governor.
They'll be back on the campaign trail
