McCain to challenge Obama over Iraq

(NECN/ABC) - Barack Obama said he will visit Iraq and Afghanistan before the election.

He added that he had spoken by phone to the Iraqi Foreign Minister and repeated his commitment to pull U-S forces from the war there.

That brought a reproach from John McCain though on Monday it was Obama who delivered an unexpected reproach of his own.

SCRIPT: Al Gore is a former Vice President and Nobel prize winner. But Monday night in Detroit, he was endorser-in-chief for Barack Obama.

"For America to lead the world through the dangers we are facing and seas the opportunities we are facing we have got to have new leadership."

It was the first of what could be many appearances by the popular Gore on Obama's behalf.

"In looking back over the last eight years i can tell you that we have learned one important fact since the year 2000, take it from me, elections matter"

Speaking at his Arlington, Virginia campaign headquarters earlier in the day, John McCain once again pressed his opponent to accept a series of town hall meetings, in addition to three presidential debates.

"If we are really going to change the dynamic in Washington, change the way we do business, lets change the campaign."

One of the issues McCain is eager to challenge Obama on is Iraq.

"He was wrong when he said that the surge would not succeed he was wrong when he said that we were failing in Iraq as a result of it and he's wrong today."

The presumptive

democratic nominee Obama announced that he will visit both Afghanistan and Iraq before November's election.

ABC News reporter TJ Winick has more on the story.
