| August 20, 2008 Mixed views for possible McCain-Lieberman ticket
|
(Brian Burnell, NECN: Hartford, MA) - One man who's name is reportedly on McCain's list of potential running mates has been down the vice presidential road before. Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman was Al Gore's running mate eight years ago.
Ever since he endorsed John McCain for president in December there has been speculation that McCain might choose Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman as his running mate. Lieberman certainly has experience.
Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Connecticut: Believe it or not this is Joe Lieberman. I'm the guy running for Vice President with Al Gore.
Lieberman was the democratic choice for VP in 2000. That year he stopped in to democratic headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. Next time he's in town he'll be speaking at the republican convention. But will it be as the nominee for vice-president?
Sen. John McCain, R-Presidential Candidate: One of the great honors of my life is the friendship and support of Senator Joe Lieberman.
Connecticut's Republican Party chairman Chris Healy says its not his job to tell McCain whom to choose but he does see why there has been so much talk about Lieberman.
Chris Healy, CT Republican Chairman: (14:03:18) Joe Lieberman's a United States Senator and he's been very solid on the issue of terrorism and certainly he's been nominated at least once to be Vice President.
Voters here in Lieberman's home state give mixed reviews when asked if he would be a good choice for
McCain.
Lone Coleman, Coventry CT: What would you think if he chose Joe Lieberman? I think he's too much to the left. Joe Lieberman? Joe Lieberman is too much to the left.
Joanne Williams, Colchester CT: I think it would be a great team. I don't think it would help McCain win the election but I'd like to see it happen.
John Carlson, Old Saybrook CT: McCain is already on the fence with the republican base and Joe Lieberman just provides another question because he's a pro-abortion candidate.
Tom Psillas, East Berlin CT: Its going to help the republicans tremendously because it brings them kind of middle of the road as opposed to being typical republicans.
Scott Schwerdtfeger, Bloomfield CT: Joe Lieberman, first, is a democrat. I think he's got a tough time pulling democratic votes let alone republican and he flip flops on issues quite frequently.
ONE FRIEND OF MCCAIN AND LIEBERMAN SAYS IT'S UNLIKELY.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell, R-Connecticut: Where did this come from? I thought this had long been put to bed. But I honestly don't think that Joe Lieberman will be the Vice Presidential choice.
It's looking like Rell is right. The word is Lieberman will address the republican convention on the first night. The vice presidential nominee gives an acceptance speech on the third night so the scheduling would seem to indicate Lieberman is out.
That would also eliminate former Pennsylvania governor tom ridge... Also pro-choice... Also speaking before night three.
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal are on the schedule for the third night... They've both been mentioned. And South Carolina governor Mark Sanford is not on the speaker's list at all... Yet.
