(NECN: Amman, Jordan) - Speaking in Amman, Jordan this morning, Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama said "Our troops are performing brilliantly under difficult circumstances and with extremely high morale," said Obama of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"We must act now to reverse a deteriorating situation," said Obama of the situation in Afghanistan. Obama says Afghanistan is the central front in the war against terrorism.
"My view is that we can re-deploy safely in 16 months. As president, I intend to work with our military commanders to re-deploy out of Iraq carefully," said Obama. Obama says Iraqi leaders want to take more responsibility.
"If we responsibly end the war in Iraq, we can strengthen our military," said Obama. Obama says there has been security progress in Iraq but now a political solution is needed.
Obama says U.S. military can't be in Iraq forever.
Obama says the Israelis and Palestinians both need to make compromises.
Obama no longer wants U.S. troops in combat operations in Iraq.
