Obama refuses Clinton's debate challenge

(NECN/ABC) - Campaigning this weekend in Indiana, Senator Hillary Clinton threw down an old style challenge to rival senator Barack Obama.

Clinton 'I hope we'll be able to have a good old fashioned Lincoln/Douglas debate right here in Indiana.”

Old fashioned- as in- one on one- no moderator- like the famous series of Debates from 1858. In Indianapolis Sunday- Obama refused the challenge.

Obama: "We've got nine days to try to campaign and meet as many voters as possible. So rather than being in a studio I want to make sure that we're reaching out to folks where they live, answering their questions and having as many interactions as possible."

With an increasing focus on race in the democratic contest- Obama said this weekend that race isn't the reason he's failing to win over working class white voters.

While cameras rolled- Obama headed to church on Sunday- the same day- his controversial former pastor was continuing *his* public Tour.

But with primaries in Indiana and North Carolina barely more than a week Away- the "Wright" issue is a distraction Obama doesn't need- he Acknowledged this weekend that Wright is a legitimate political issue- Leaving the door open for senator John McCain.

John McCain: “I can understand, I can understand why people are upset about this. I can understand why Americans, when viewing these kinds of comments, are angry and upset.”

There are only a handful of contests after North Carolina

and Indiana to Help choose the democratic nominee-

Party leaders are warning that uncommitted Superdelegates need to make up their mind--soon.
