Poll shows race for White House tightening

(NECN: Greg Wayland) - On the road to the White House, Barack Obama remains mum about his choice for vice president. He is expected to make the announcement today or tomorrow. Meanwhile, Republican John McCain's decision probably won't be announced until next week.

With less than three months until the general election, where do the candidates stand with voters? In the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC telephone poll, conducted between August 15th and August 18th to registered voters nationwide, Obama is still ahead, but the race is tightening. The margin of error is plus/minus 3.1%.

The poll numbers show Obama at 45% and McCain at 42%.

The same show polls shows 50% of voters with quite a bit of confidence in Mccain as commander-in-chief, compared to only 39% who share that confidence in Obama.

Meanwhile, nearly 4 in 10 voters say McCain is too old to assume office.
