| November 20, 2008 On the web: More gifts that give something back
|
(NECN: Ted McEnroe) - With the holidays approaching, we wanted to give you some more ideas for gifts that matter more than a pair of gloves that might wind up in the back of your closet.
Three more possible places to visit this week:
The first is justgive.org, a site that serves as a one-stop shop for charity donations. JustGive has set up a number of directories of charities around the world, broken into groups. If you're looking for a gift in someone's honor, you can search for different types of charities that might match your "recipient's" interests.
JustGive also offers registries, where you can set up a list of charities you select, and let people come in and give to those charities in your honor. It's a great option for wedding registries, and so on as well.
A different spin on the charity registry can be found at changingthepresent.org, which features registries where the donations are tied to specific tasks, such as digging a well, providing supplies to a rural school, or giving support to a cancer patient. The gifts come at all different dollar levels - and I can vouch for this one personally, since my wife and I used the company for a charity registry for our wedding.
If you're not ready to show up with a smile and card for the holidays - if you really want to give *stuff*, eBay has a good way to make sure your stuff is more socially beneficial.
The site launched
World of Good this fall - a section of the site specifically set aside for gifts that could make a positive difference, using 'Fair Trade' guidelines and more. When you surf the site and find a gift you like, you can click on the gift and learn more about the person or organization that produces it. It's a great way to give a gift with a story - so your recipient knows it's not just a _______, but it's something that is making a difference.
Keep those gift ideas coming! Send them in to web@necn.com.
