| February 21, 2008 Myspace mulls music site
|
LOS ANGELES (AP) - It's already become a place for people to exchange photos, news and gossip. Now MySpace is thinking about launching an online music service.
Its parent company, News Corporation, has stepped to the four major record labels to talk
about the possibility of setting up a music service through the social networking site. The goal is to set up a site that can offer content in a variety of ways, including free digital streams, MP3 downloads and a subscription plan.
News Corporation. is proposing that the service be launched as a joint venture with the major recording labels, which would receive an equity stake in the new
company.
With sales of CDs in a downward spiral, record companies have licensed their content for sale as unprotected MP3s and for free streaming on ad-supported sites as a way of generating revenue.
