Ex-NFL QB Steve McNair found shot dead

(NECN: Nashville, Tenn.) - Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair was found shot dead in Nashville on Saturday, according to Metro Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron.

Aaron said that police received a call at around 1:30 Saturday afternoon concerning people injured in a condominium.

"When police officers arrived in response to that call, they found two individuals who had been shot to death inside the residence -- one female, one male," Aaron said. "We now know that the male deceased is Steve McNair."

Aaron said that the female had been tentatively identified, but needed to notify her next of kin.

McNair suffered a gunshot wound to the head, according to a report by NewsChannel5.com.

"We don't know what the circumstances are that is related to this," Aaron said. "There are persons who were around the complex today -- visitors -- who have been taken to headquarters for questioning just to see what they know."

Aaron said that no one was in custody regarding this matter.

McNair played 11 seasons with the Titans franchise, two while the team was located in Houston and known as the Oilers.

He played his final two season with the Baltimore Ravens before retiring after the 2007 campaign.

Former Titans general manager and current Patriots senior football advisor Floyd Reese selected McNair third overall in the 1995 NFL Draft.

Reese issued this statement on Saturday evening upon learning of McNair's death:

"I am deeply saddened to learn of today's tragic news regarding the death of Steve McNair. He was a player who I admired a great deal. He was a tremendous leader and an absolute warrior. He felt like it was his responsibility to lead by working hard every day, no matter what. I don't think there was a player who played with him or against him that didn't look up to him and respect him. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, his friends and the many teammates who loved and admired him."
