(NECN) - Bill Belichick was thrown a curveball in the Patriots season opener. After sitting Tom Brady down the entire preseason due to an injured foot, the 2007 NFL MVP injured his knee in the first quarter against the Chiefs. That thrust unproven backup Matt Cassel into the quarterback role for the Patriots. Cassel performed about as well as could be expected, completing 13-of-18 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown. He threw no interceptions. Belichick and Cassel talked about it all after the game. Patriots.com NFL.com
