Epstein: Sox not desperate to improve

(NECN: Boston, MA) - Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein met with reporters Monday to discuss the just completed season, and what his priorities are for the offseason. Theo also commented on Mike Lowell's surgery, saying the doctors termed it "a complete success". He added that the team expects Lowell to be ready to contribute right from the start in 2009.

As for the offseason, Theo says that the team's competition is more challenging than it has ever been, but remains confident. "We're at a point now where we have a very solid foundation, as an organization we are not just going out this winter to try to address the 2009 team, and that's it. Instead a better way to look at it is we're continuing the process of building and evolving the organization"

When asked what he would look to improve on Theo said "as an organization we're not desperate to improve any one area." He says just a few tweaks with the starting rotation and bullpen will make them solid. He cited depth at all infield and outfield positions, with the only real question mark coming with the free agency of Jason Varitek behind the plate.
