Peter Gammons on Bonds rumors, 'Hot Stove' and Matt Holliday in Boston?

(NECN: Boston, Mass.) - First, Peter Gammons wants to make it clear, he does not expect to see Barry Bonds in a Red Sox uniform. "I would be absolutely shocked if Barry Bonds ever ended up in Boston," Gammons said, noting that the circus around Bonds would have a massive impact on the Red Sox clubhouse.

Gammons calls Bonds' downfall one of the most tragic stories in baseball history. "At the end of the 1998 season, Barry Bonds was one of the 10 greatest players of all time... and all that has taken place in the last ten years in Shakespearean in tragedy," Gammons said. "(in the game today), Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are like men without countries, and I find that, given their place in baseball history, I find that tragic."

With Bonds not in the Sox' plans, who might be a good fit in Boston? Gammons sees possibilities in a deal with the Colorado Rockies to bring Matt Holliday to Boston. "But it would have to be the right fit," Gammons said, noting the Sox would wait as long as possible until they know more about the health of David Ortiz.

Gammons made his comments as he talked with Mike Giardi of NECN about this summer's "Hot Stove, Cool Music" charity concert at Fenway Park. The concert August 17 will feature Buddy Guy and George Thorogood.
