| August 12, 2008 Theo Epstein on Paul Byrd and Buchholz' future

(NECN: Boston) - The Boston Red Sox have gone out to get some more stability in their pitching staff. The Sox acquired Paul Byrd from the Cleveland Indians for future considerations today. But General Manager Theo Epstein says the Byrd acquisition doesn't mean that the Sox think any less highly of the struggling Clay Buchholz.
"We think Byrd can add a ceteran presence to our starting rotation," said Epstein. "By no means are we giving up on Clay Buchholz," he added,"We still think he's going to be a huge part of our future and may well prove to be an important part of our present."
Byrd's overall stats look lackluster this year, but the soft-tossing 37-year-old is 4-0 since the All-Star break, with an ERA just over 1.
Meanwhile, the shoulder injury that put Tim Wakefield on the disabled list has given another knuckleballer an opportunity to make his debut.
Charlie Zink, who had to reinvent his pitching career as a knuckleball pitcher, has pitched his way to a 12-4 record with Pawtucket this season.
