| September 4, 2008 As Hanna nears, Florida readies for possible evacuations
|
(NECN/ABC) - In the Carolinas they are boarding up and stocking up-- preparing for the
arrival of Hanna sometime Saturday:
NICOLE CLEMENTS Resident "I always take them seriously even if they're not projected directly for Wilmington." So does the Air Force.
80 fighter jets are being moved inland to safety. Some residents are being
urged to do the same. At Florida's Lake Okeechobee, the floodgates are
being opened in anticipation of the storm which could drop 10 inches of
rain in some areas.
It's already inundated Haiti, leaving villages knee deep in water and
causing 61 deaths. And two more storms are churning in the Atlantic. The
next, Ike, is a dangerous category 4 hurricane, with 140 mile an hour winds. It's too soon to predict its path-- but Florida's Governor Crist is
sounding the alarm.
GOV. CHARLIE CRIST R-FL "Be prepared to act in the event that local officials recommend evacuations
or protective action."
The two million Louisiana residents who evacuated for Hurricane Gustav are
STILL trying to get home. They are frustrated by bumper to bumper traffic...
EVACUEE "That's the worst part. He was asleep, I was driving. We've only had one
nervous breakdown, only one nervous breakdown."
When they finally do arrive many will find themselves without power...some
for up to a month:
GOB. BOBBY JINDAL R-LA "Our hope is to get them back on as quickly as possible."
Before another storm hits and they have to
go through this all over again.
