This is what it looked and sounded like when the quake struck the Chengdu airport.
The devastation is so widespread - the suffering so great - that it's hard to get your head around the magnitude of the disaster.
One small story gives the tragedy a face. Soldiers dig with their hands to reach a little boy trapped in the wreckage of a school. He's alive, but his legs have been crushed by debris. A soldier comforts the child, as doctors prepare to amputate his legs.
Stories like it are being played out across the quake zone. Rescuers shout encouragement, but they know time is working against them.
And on Tuesday, another problem to compound the tragedy....the weather.
