Young girl killed as flash floods destroy campground

(Lauren Collins, NECN: Ashland, NH) - Northern New England is expected to be the hardest hit from the recent downpours. In New Hampshire, flash floods killed a seven year old girl when her family's car was washed away by flood waters.

The family was at a campsite trying to escape the floods when the SUV flipped over. The car was swept a thousand feet downstream in flash floods. Rescuers say the father, mother and infant son managed to escape, clinging to a tree. But the 7-year-old girl never made it out of the SUV alive.

The girl's father frantically yelled for help.

The Ashland New Hampshire Swiftwater Rescue Team located the girl's body three hours after she went missing. She has not been identified but the family is from Rhode Island.
