November 2, 2009 Runoff scrapped in Afghanistan, Karzai declared Presidential winner Play video

(NECN) - The Presidency of Afghanistan was supposed to be decided by a runoff election this coming Saturday.

But Monday, the incumbent Hamid Karzai's grip on office is secure, as his only rival dropped out of the race over the weekend, saying the vote would be corrupt.

The Obama administration quickly congratulated their controversial ally.
