Script:
Hong Zhang, an international student at Worcester’s Clark University, spent the morning panic stricken as images of destruction in southwestern China flashed across his TV screen.
Zhang is from Chengdu, one of the areas hit by a powerful earthquake that hit central China. The death toll is estimated at 9,000. For hours, he tried desperately to reach family and friends in China. But was unsuccessful because of network jams and communication disruptions.
It wasn’t until almost noon time that Zhang was relieved to finally receive a call from his mother.
“I could tell from her voice that she was worried and scared because her voice was shaking, and very nervous.”
His mother told him that she thought she was in danger during the quake but managed to run to a secure area.
Zhang's family is believed to be safe. But like thousands, they have evacuated their city in fear that aftershocks could cause further destruction.
While Zhang is uncertain of the condition of his hometown, he is relieved his family is OK.
