Pirates release captives from seized ship

(NECN/ABC) - 30 crewmen held prisoner by pirates were freed Friday. It happened off the coast of Somalia, where a French tourist yacht was stormed by pirates a week ago. The region has seen a sharp rise in piracy, and the U.S. is being called upon to help.

This nighttime video by the French Navy shows the tourist yacht just days after its capture sailing off Somalia's coast. A French warship was dispatched to rescue the 30 crew members on board. They were taken hostage by pirates on April 4.

French President Sarkozy announced all 30 were freed without incident.

The French prime minister is now calling on the United Nations to combat rising piracy in the region. Pirates hijacked more than two dozen ships off Somalia's coast last year.

ABC's Gloria Riviera has the story.
