(NECN: Myanmar) - The U.S. sent a second plane load of cyclone aid to Myanmar on Tuesday after the government agreed to accept more U.S. help.
Myanmar says there are 62,000 dead or missing, whilst the UN suggests the death toll is likely to be more than 100,000.
Cyclone Nargis, which hit the Irrawaddy delta on May 3, has severely affected an estimated a further two million people.
Admiral Timothy J. Keating, commander of the U.S. Pacific Forces, flew into Myanmar on the initial U.S. aid flight on Monday to try to persuade the junta to
relent and accept more help from the U.S.
The military could also ferry aid workers to the hardest-hit regions, which remain hard to reach.
However Myanmar authorities told Keating that storm victims' basic needs were being fulfilled.
The U.S. has pushed hard for the junta to let U.S. troops play a big role in relief operations in the aftermath of the cyclone.
