NEW ENGLAND DREAM HOUSE: Out the Backdoor: Winter Birding
Out the Backdoor: Winter Birding

(NECN) - Birding is a popular way to enjoy your yard in winter. We got some great tips from Backyard Birds and Garden Frills located at 244 U.S. Route 1 in York Maine. The phone number is 207-363-8181 and the web site is www.backyardbirdsandgardenfrills.com.

If Doing what you love is the road to happiness - then Rex and Judy Lambert feel very pleased these days. They opened "Backyard birds and garden frills" in York, Maine as an addition to their already thriving antique business.

" My wife has fed birds since we were married for 47 years so you know she loves the birds and has always fed the birds and it's always been a big part of our life."

Rex says giving birds food is especially important in winter.

" In the summertime they have plenty of food, natural food, and it's much easier for them to get food but in the wintertime it's a real problem."

They sell lots of different kinds of food - Rex says most birds like quality seeds.

" That gives you a good base feed for all the birds that all the birds will eat."

Rex and Judy's daughter Kelly Dignam showed us a new feeder that's easier to clean. It costs about 44 dollars.

" Press these two buttons on the bottom here and it pops off so you're able to easily get a brush inside and clean out the bottom."

Rex even puts out a dish of food for squirrels to keep them in check.

"If he's got enough to eat he's not going to bother to try and jump up on the feeder and fight with the birds."

Many birds enjoy suet - a mixture made with a base of animal fat.

" They need that for the fat content."

Rex and Judy's bluebirds dine on mealworms they grow by the thousands. Fresh water is essential - Rex recommends changing the water once a day and using a heater embedded in the birdbath to keep it from freezing.

" They wash everyday believe it or not. It's hard to believe that they do but they do and they drink a lot of water."

Bird houses range in price from 10 dollars to 400 dollars. Not all the birds like houses - Kelly says those who do can be picky.

" From the owl down to the small titmouse and bluebird you know what size hole the birdhouse has and where you position it and how high it's positioned all make a difference on what bird will nest in that house."

This 169-dollar birdhouse even comes with video camera so you can keep track of what the birds are doing.

" Has a little light on there like a night light. Doesn't bother the birds. They don't even know it's there. And so you can watch the whole process from building the nest to the eggs to them hatching."

Rex admits it's hard to find time to go out birding - but they enjoy the ones who live near the store.

"It's the most fulfilling thing you can ever imagine. To see them and the different things that go on because of them is incredible."
