(NECN: Washington D.C.) - In a brief statement issued by President Bush, he acknowledged that the economy was in a slowdown, but expressed optimism that the stimulus package will ease some American's worries.
On Monday, rebate checks will start being delivered through direct deposit to those who qualified. The rebates range from $300 to $1,200 and are the centerpiece of the government's $168 billion stimulus package. The plan which was announced in February was designed to brace the weakening economy.
7.7 million will begin to receive the money on Monday through direct deposit, and the checks will start to arrive in the mail on May 9th.
Bush says he is confident that the money delivered by the treasury department will help consumers struggling with the rising cost at the fuel pumps and the grocery store.
