(NECN) - A 66-year-old swimmer was attacked and killed Friday by a shark in the ocean off San Diego County. The man was training with a group of triathletes at Solana Beach when the incident took place around 7 a.m.
The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to a lifeguard station for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene. His injuries crossed both thighs.
The shark is believed to have been a great white.
Swimmers are ordered to stay out of the water for a 17-mile stretch around the site attack. County authorities have sent up helicopters to scan the waters for the shark.
"The shark is still in the area. We're sure of that," Mayor Joe Kellejian said.
The last fatal shark attack along San Diego County was off Ocean Beach in April 1994.
