(NECN: Washington) - A House committee held a hearing Tuesday on the Food and Drug Administration and if it is adequately regulating the overseas manufacture of pharmaceutical products. This comes after it was found that contaminated doses of the blood thinner Heparin had probably come through a Chinese plant that the agency had never inspected.
Currently the FDA allocates about $10 million was dedicated for foreign inspections but it is estimated the FDA would need far more resources to inspect each of the 3,249 foreign drug establishments listed by the agency. Rep. John Dingell pressed the FDA commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach about how much the agency really needs to do it's job.
The Federal Drug Administration says at least 81 Americans have died from contaminated Heparin.
