(NECN: Washington) - During a White House news conference on Tuesday, President Bush was asked about the situation in the Middle East. He was asked if he believed his foreign policy in the Mideast was undermined by former President Carter's meeting with Hamas leaders.
President Bush said peace is undermined by Hamas in the Middle East. "They're the ones who are trying to create enough violence to try and stop the advance of a two-party state solution," said Bush.
Bush said we are "witnessing a struggle between those who understand liberty and those who want to stop the advance of liberty." "Hamas has made their position very clear," said Bush, and "unfortunately they are getting help in Syria and there are rumors about Iranian help."
"The problem is Hamas," said Bush.
