Review: The Old Village Inn

(TV Diner) - With black and white awnings on windows and portico, the entrance into the Old Village Inn in Ogunquit, Maine was like stepping into a mid-nineteenth century parlor that lead to several nice dining venues. Even the tables on an enclosed front porch were dressed in old English china on attractive linens set under hanging Tiffany style lamps-all ready for service for the American and Continental menu.

We started with the Pot Stickers. Nicely presented, the pan-seared pork-filled dumplings were appropriately moist and crispy with very good Thai dipping sauce.

The Poached Pear Salad based baby spinach with port wine flavored pears. Goat cheese and toasted walnuts emphasized the orange thyme vinaigrette that uniquely complimented the salad.

A hefty fourteen ounce grilled Pork Porterhouse Chop was favored with an apple brandy and maple demi-glaze that was very tasty on the meat as well as the Yukon Gold mashed potatoes.

The Salmon with Champagne Vinaigrette was supposed to be pan seared, but the bland fish medallions were more poached and not helped by the dressing or the risotto-not a good dish.

The Chocolate Pudding Cake somehow missed out on the pudding part and was more like a dry flour less cake.

The Banana Bread Pudding was strong with the banana, but not moist and just too thick in texture, even with a sweet sauce.

Our server was very pleasant, but the wait was too long between

courses. Prices were moderate with appetizers six to nine dollars, entrees sixteen to twenty-six dollars and desserts eight to nine dollars.

The Old Village Inn has a pleasant informal atmosphere and varied menu that leans heavily on cream sauces. The dishes are not extraordinary and although prices are reasonable, the service is not particularly efficient.

It earns the Silver Plate.
