Review: Puerta Vallarta

(TV Diner)-Newington, CT

One of four Connecticut locations, Puerto Vallarta in Newington is a popular destination among Mexican food lovers. Smack dab on the busy Berlin Turnpike, this cozy location is one of our faves.

From the authentic décor to the mingling Mariachi band, this place represents Mexico. With an extensive drink menu including some of the best (and strongest!) Margaritas around, you’re sure to have yourself a fine time.

The menu features a wide array of traditional food, and some not so traditional. For example, if you happen to bring a little ‘gringo’ with you, you can order a grilled cheese, hamburgers and fries. We, however, stuck with the good stuff.

First up was the Jalapeño Popper appetizer. Tender peppers with oozing cheese centers were served with a rich dipping sauce and were alternated with tall breaded asparagus stalks.

Next up were the chicken quesadillas. These were jam packed with tender chicken, cheese and veggies and served with no small amount of sour cream and guacamole.

The Beef Burrito platter was enormous. A giant flour tortilla filled to bursting, accompanied by savory rice and beans. Delicious!

The Chili Relleno was the absolute best we’ve ever had. Moist cheese surrounded by an Anaheim pepper was coated with a light egg batter, all topped with a tangy red sauce and served with rice and beans. Perfection.

The Flan was also a hit. Very dense and oh, so decadent,

it was cool and refreshing.

It seemed by now we couldn’t go wrong and the Fried Ice Cream sealed the deal. Cool and sweet, served in a crispy cup, it was more than plenty to share.

Service was excellent at Puerto Vallarta. The owners and wait staff were both friendly and knowledgeable about menu items and ingredients.

Apps averaged $8, entrees $10-15 and desserts around $6. We found the value to be outstanding for delicious food in extravagant portions.

Overall, Puerto Vallarta earned the Platinum plate. They can be reached at 860-667-8080 or on the web at puertovallartausa.com. This location is at 2385 Berlin Turnpike in Newington, Connecticut. Parking is plentiful, so grab your sombrero and head to Puerto Vallarta!
