Matilda: The Musical

A Broadway musical that's captured audiences' hearts is making its Boston debut.

"Matilda the Musical" is the stage adaptation of the beloved Roald Dahl book and Danny DeVito movie. The show tells the story of a smart little girl with a wild imagination who is trying to take control of her life.

"It teaches kids a lesson that you should stand up for yourself and never give up," said Lily Brooks O'Briant, one of the actresses playing Matilda.

O'Briant, Savannah Grace Elmer, and Sarah McKinley Austin share the lead role, a dream opportunity for these young stars.

"I never knew this would happen," said Austin.

"You can make many friends, and basically, you have a second family and it's so much fun doing the roles," Elmer said.

"Matilda" features a few villains, including school headmistress Miss Trunchbull, played by Dan Chameroy.

"It's a great part," Chameroy said. "Playing a villain in any show, whether it's film, T.V., theater, it's always awesome."

The show's infectious music by Tim Minchin sets it apart from other Broadway musicals.

"Tim Minchin is a genius. He's kind of amazing. The style of music is its own thing. It's not like anything else," said Chameroy.

Local audiences have a chance to see this Tony Award-winning showstopper through June 26 at the Boston Opera House. The musical is recommended for children ages 6 and up. For ticket information, click here.
