Two top gambling regulators are stepping down.

Massachusetts Gaming Commissioner James McHugh is retiring effective Sept. 30 and commission Executive Director Rick Day is resigning after a scheduled vacation next week.

In separate memos released Monday, both cited wanting to spend more time with their families after serving for about three and a half years.

State Gaming Commission Chair Stephen Crosby says the announcements mark the first significant changes in the organization, which was created when Massachusetts opened its doors to casinos in 2011.

McHugh, a former state court judge, is one of five commission members appointed by the governor, attorney general and treasurer. State Attorney General Maura Healey gets to pick McHugh's successor.

Day, who hails from Montana, is expected to serve as commission consultant going forward.
