Could Market Basket be Forced to Close Stores?

The two sides in the ongoing Market Basket feud are reportedly still working to finalize a deal, but a contingency plan has also been prepared that would close 61 of the grocery chain's 71 stores, according to the Boston Globe.

The newspaper said the sale of the company to former CEO Arthur T. Demoulas isn't likely to be completed until late Wednesday at the earliest. If a deal isn't brokered soon, store closures may be needed to make up for the lost sales the company has experienced as a result of the month-plus dispute.

Employees and customers started a boycott earlier this summer after Demoulas' firing, leading to bare shelves and little business for the New England supermarket chain.
