Fall Economy Preview

IHS Chief Economist Nariman Behravesh joined NECN to talk about the economic outlook for the fall

After six months of 200,000 job growth, hiring slowed down dramatically in August. Would you believe the Market Basket situation played a role?

IHS Chief Economist Nariman Behravesh joined NECN to talk about the economic outlook for the fall.

"17,000 workers weren't working- Market Basket workers weren't working. That had a big affect on it," Behravesh said. "I would tend to think that we'll see a nice bounce back in payroll employment for September."

Behravesh continued by talking about the economy on a national and international level, specifically how unrest affects the market.

"We're more of an internal market that export dependent. Exports are important, but they're only 12 percent of the economy. So, in that sense, we're less export dependent than say Germany is," Behravesh said. "The big change in the last few years is we're essentially approaching energy independence, and therefore, less vulnerable to shocks in other parts of the world.

In addition, Behravesh talked about the widening wealth gap in the United States.
